Speed Pixel #1 + Thoughts on Freelance Commission Life!

By CA, July 1, 2020

The first of hopefully many! For the Talented Arkayde Plus!

Fiverr.com has been one of my most consistent sources of gig work ever.

I started off offering commissions on Deviantart and eBay, but I’d say both dried up pretty badly, and were devoured by constant price undercutting, and changing policies.

But Fiverr is pretty great by having a non-dimishable baseline of 5 bucks. It helps eliminate that “Race to the Bottom” by giving a bottom that is, sadly, but honestly, higher than artist give themselves on other platforms. Sure, people still undercut the work they’re doing (and I’m sure I’m guilty of this as well), but the platform offers a solid way to grow / enhance a gig, and the buying base GENERALLY seems to understand that what’s provided, is actually a worthy item.

And over all this time, I’ve rarely shown or talked about this work. The “old” early 2000s days of commissions were very restrictive. People didn’t want you to share anything you made for them, and I rarely saw anyone post what I made anywhere!

That has started to change, however. It’s not like the Internet is new or anything, but peoples attitudes have definitely shifted. Client and Artist will post a work created from both onto their Twitter Feeds and Facebooks, and the dialogue has become less of a 1-time conversation, and more of a working relationship.

This feels nice for me, because, honestly, I hate working on cool images and animations for people, and then NEVER HEARING ANYTHING ABOUT THEM AGAIN. Respectfully, I don’t share anything I haven’t been given the OK to. So I often get to look back and think “wow, I did that? I wish more people knew!”

Maybe you, dear reader, will be my next awesome client? That I’ll get to make an awesome picture for, and then edit a video showing the entire process of? Maybe we’ll get to go on an artistic adventure together!

Even if not, thanks for making it to the end of this rant! If you enjoyed anything you see, hit me up at the usual places!
